Eastern Idaho State Fair

During the first week of September, the Eastern Idaho State Fair takes place in Blackfoot, ID. Throughout the week, a myriad of rodeo and wrangling events are open to the public at great prices (and sometimes even for free). During the Gem State Classic Pro Rodeo, bare-back riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, team roping, and more unfold before the audience in the Grandstand Arena. Other rodeo-related events throughout fair week include bull riding and mutton bustin’ for the little ones. The Eastern Idaho State Fair is not just a place for rodeos, but also for live entertainment, such as A-list bands, comedians, and artists. Locals in east Idaho wait patiently all summer for the great food, drinks, games, entertainment, and carnival attractions that the fair offers.

War Bonnet Roundup

Building their reputation as the “oldest rodeo in Idaho”, the War Bonnet Round Up is an event you don’t want to miss. Founded in 1911, The War Bonnet features various rodeo competitions, including bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, and bull riding. There are also events for youngsters, including mutton busting and calf riding. Hosted the first weekend in August, the War Bonnet is one of the most attended rodeos in east Idaho, and with over 110 years of experience, it’s easy to see why. It attracts both professional and amateur rodeo riders from around the country, and is a popular event for locals and visitors alike. In addition to the rodeo competitions, there’s also a great variety of western-themed merchandise vendors, food and drink stands, and other entertainment options.

Salmon Stampede

Salmon, ID is one of the most geographically isolated community in the lower 48 states. It’s a small town nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains with miles of roadless wilderness surrounding the area. This wild west frontier atmosphere can be experienced by the culture and heritage embodied through the Salmon Stampede rodeo. With a historical precedence of ranching, wrangling, and an overall western way of living, the folks in Salmon hold one of the truest old-timey rodeos in the state. With a wide variety of events such as roping, round-ups, branding, bronc riding, and mutton busting, there’s sure to be an awesome event that will fit into your schedule. Even if rodeos aren’t your cup of tea, the visit to Salmon is definitely worth the trip if you’re in the Sawtooth Recreation Area.

Teton Valley Rodeo

The Teton Valley is situated on the western side of the Teton mountain range. Just under an hour drive from Jackson and Grand Teton National Park, this rodeo provides a true western experience for locals and tourists in the area, at a phenomenal price. Bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, steer wrestling, and more are offered by the Teton Valley Rodeo in addition to great food and drink vendors. If you’re looking for to embrace your inner cowboy or cowgirl in a truly authentic way to experience the wild west, don’t overlook this rodeo. One of the great perks of this rodeo is their consistent scheduling. As opposed to many other rodeos that are held for one specific day or weekend, the Teton Valley Rodeo is held every Friday night in the summer months, making it easy for both spontaneous and well-planned travelers to enjoy the spectacle on short-notice.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

Jackson Hole, WY has a reputation of being one of the premiere western tourist destinations in the country. The area was developed over 120 years ago for ranching, and the heritage associated with this lifestyle still runs strong today. Jackson Hole Rodeo is one the largest attended rodeos in Wyoming, partly due to their large tourism sector. Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of events such as bareback riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, saddle bronc riding, mini bull riding, and more. It is an incredibly well-organized event that runs throughout the summer months, and while it is fairly more expensive than some of the other rodeos in this list, the close proximity to lodging and cowboy atmosphere of Jackson proves to enhance the overall experience.
